Transforming The Journey of Grief - Victims of Crime Awareness

Shelley D. Chuchmuch

I was asked to speak at the National Victims of Crime awareness week for the former Dakota Ojibway Police Service, now re - branded Manitoba Police Service. It was both a monumental event and instrumental in shaping my own journey of healing through the elders circle of justice and care.

It takes a community to heal and raise a child. As I reflect back on my own cognition, behavior and the "resonance" of my "energy emission", reaching for the "stars" vs keeping it simple, there are valuable lesson to be learned when learning from those who have a little more snow on the roof top.

Representing, not just the perspective of one "culture", rather dancing to the spiritual tune of many, I am only human after all and I also was also a victim of crime.

I am so grateful to have embraced the healing thought culture of the elders .

Reflecting back, I too, needed to be put in "hack" by the elders until I could learn to speak my truth without shooting bullets from my tongue.

My pain spilled out through my pores. No man is an island. The energy from the drum and of my community moves me forward.

I am healed. My tears are dry and for today, I live in peace.

I celebrate the sun as I feel the safety of my community and of the star blanket.

Thank you for my healing and thank you in sharing in my journey of transforming grief to joy. Thank you for creating the culture that is me.
